About Perpetual Trophies
By Judy Hubert
Reprinted from the WPCAC Newsletter
Do YOU have a Perpetual Trophy? Do you know what a Perpetual Trophy is? Do you have any idea how many people and ponies are involved with a Perpetual Trophy? They are really special, and if you have ever won one, you, too, are very special – and so is your pony/cob.

These Perpetual Trophies are presented at the Annual Meeting of the Welsh Pony and Cob Association of CA Pacific Coast Awards Meeting. A tremendous amount of time, work and money has gone into the winning of each of these trophies. Each recipient is asked to care for it for the year, and return it to the next recipient in the same condition as they received it. This means it should be dusted, cleaned and polished when it is returned. As you will see over the months, most of these trophies have been in existence for 15 to 20 years (some, a little more). A lot of shows are represented here – and a lot of people!

As outlined in the last issue of your WPCAC Bulletin, the WPCAC sponsors/offers many perpetual trophies. Actually, with, I believe one exception, each of these trophies has been sponsored/offered by individuals who believe very strongly in the perpetuation of a single focus.

For instance, the FARMORE FARMS SECTION B WELSH PONY PERPETUAL TROPHY was established in 1988 by Farmore Farms. This trophy is awarded to the high score of a Section B Mare or Stallion in Registered Welsh Halter. The trophy is awarded to the WPCAC Owner. Since 1988, the following ponies have won this award.

1988 - Rio Oso Silver Vanity – Tammy Burgin
1989 - Farmore Publicity – Tammy Burgin
1990 - Farmore Publicity – Tammy Burgin
1991 - Tradewind’s Meadowlark – Carol Lynn
1992 - KGF Raisin Attention – Tammy Burgin
1993 - K.D.’s Silver Lining – Tammy Burgin
1994 - KGF Girl Friday – Colleen Wing
1995 - Goldhills Diamond Lil – Jackie Hubert
1996 - KGF Girl Friday – Colleen Wing
1997 - Gayfields Call the Cops – Jackie Hubert
1998 - Gayfields Call the Cops – Jackie Hubert
1999 - Cuesta Marquita – Suzan Stevens
2000 - *Telynau Royal Charter – Tammy Burgin
2001 - *Telynau Royal Charter – Tammy Burgin
2001 - Gayfields Skip to My Lou – Gail & Arthur Thomson
2001 - *Telynau Ballerina – Tammy Burgin
2002 - *Telynau Royal Charter – Tammy Burgin
For any of you who have owned/shown any of these animals, if you would like to present a short write-up on them, I'm sure our readers would be interested in their bloodlines, and any interesting stories you may have about them.
SIERRA VIEW ADULT
Established in 1986, this trophy, donated by Lisette and Willis Kroepelin, is awarded to the high score adult rider/driver and pony combination. Registered Welsh classes to count are:  Jumpers, Hunters (over fences), Pleasure Driving, English Pleasure, Western Pleasure and Trail.  Exhibitor and owner of the pony (A, B, C, D, or Half-Welsh) must be WPCAC members to qualify for this trophy. Trophy awarded to the WPCAC owner.
1986 - Jackie Hubert - Charjo's Gypsy
1987 - Priscilla Hobday - Talybont Tawmi
1988 - Dawn Reath - Shiloh Grenadier
1989 - Jackie Hubert - Starbright Sun Raider
1990 - 1991 - Karen Young -  Heather Hills Brass Tacks
1992 - 1994 - Jackie Hubert - Starbright Sun Raider
1995 - Tina Berard - Keepsake's Dandy
1996 - Tammy Burgin -  Farmore Publicity
1997 - Coffing Oaks Charisma – Maureen Ferrell
1998 - Tammy Burgin - Farmore Publicity
1999 -  Gayfields Call the Cops – Jackie Hubert Verkuyl
2000 - 2001 - Tammy Burgin - *Telynau Royal Charter
2002 - Megan Blythe - Windrose Coby

What's entertaining with looking at these results is that a majority of the exhibitors from 1986 forward are the exhibitors of today!

Again, for any of you who have owned/shown any of these animals, if you would like to present a short write-up on them, I'm sure our readers would be interested in their bloodlines, and any interesting stories you may have about them. There were a lot of shows involved in the winning of this award – let's hear about some of them.  :o)

Our next goal should be to find a new crop of exhibitors who love ponies as much as these folks have loved them, and dedicate themselves to the promotion of the Welsh Pony.

In our next bulletin, we will feature the Rocking Horse Perpetual Trophy, Bar-G-R Perpetual Trophy, and Coskey's Sapphire Gem Memorial.

Installment #2

As we continue with our overview of Perpetual Trophies awarded every year, I find myself taking many trips down “memory lane”  Having been around since the beginning of time, I do remember all the animals and all their owners. Many of the people are still with the ponies today, and many of the friendships formed “way back when” are still friendships today.

One of our favorite classes are the Leadline Classes.  We all need to keep in mind that these riders can, and are, in many cases, our riders of “tomorrow”. We need to cultivate the youngsters – they are our best asset!

ROCKING HORSE RANCH:

The Hobday Family donated this award back in 1988, and it is awarded to the high score 7 & under rider in Registered Welsh Leadline Pleasure, Equitation and Trail. Open to A, B, C, D, ½ Reg. Welsh. Junior riders must be WPCAC members and the owner of the pony/ies must be members to qualify for the trophy.  Trophy awarded to WPCAC rider.

1988 Kiel Radovich – we recently had a note from Gay Radovich, Kiel’s mother. The whole family was involved with ponies for several years. Actually, Gay had ponies when she was a kid, so it was only natural that her kids would have ponies. Kiel is now a Senior at Lincoln High School, and his brother, Garret, is a CDF Firefighter!  Time flies!

1989 Austin Stanfel
1990 Kiel Radovich
1991 Perry Arnold
1992 Cindi Yount
1993 Justin Ferrell – Oh gee, where have we seen this name before! Justin's been riding ponies since he was a little guy – and he's now a big guy, and has a Section D Cob, Cairngan Tym. He's ridden several ponies over the years – small, medium and large – but still with the ponies.
1994 Geriann Henderson – Geriann, like all the other kids, is pretty well grown up now. She has an older sister, Beth, who also used to ride ponies. Their mom has a Cob who is currently in training. Deb is hoping to drive her Cob in CDE's one of these days.
1995 Brittany Bogan – Brittany showed up at the schooling show in April, and she's riding better than ever – and is all grown up too. Funny thing about these guys – they just don't stay little kids, do they. Her mom, Julie Blair, runs a training stable in Galt, and has always used as many Welsh Ponies as she could get her hands on.  Good job, Julie – and Brittany!
1996 Brandon Ferrell – Brandon has ridden the same pony all these years, and loves her just as much today as he did when he started riding.  He had a thrill a short time ago – his pony gave him a colt on his birthday!
1997 Allison Bronson – Allison has been riding ponies for quite some time now, and continues to do so, while helping her twin sisters to get into the act also.  We haven't seen enough of these ladies in the last few years – we're hoping that this may be the year.
1998 Sean Arbaut – Sean's mother, Kelly, was training for the Roundtree Family, and they all thought it would be good for Sean to learn how to ride – and ride he did!  However, it appears this was short lived – we haven't seen Sean for a couple of years now.
1999 Aaron Lukas – Aaron and Ashley took turns – 1999 was Aaron's year, and 2000 was Ashley's year.  Their mom, Monica Amboss was kept busy keeping these two riding, and I believe they are both still riding.  We hope to see them at a show or two this year.
2000 Ashley Lukas
2001 Sarah Frushour – Sarah is carrying on the tradition in the Hirons Family! Her mom, Nora, rode as a child, and now it's Sarah's turn. She makes Grandma and Grandpa very proud as she continues to graduate from Leadline, to Walk-Trot, and I believe, this year cantering will be included.
2002 Morgan Wendlandt – Morgan is our latest recipient of the Rocking Horse Ranch Perpetual Trophy. She has done this by riding one of Tammy Burgin's ponies, *Telynau Ballerina.  I just found out that Morgan now has her own pony, which she showed at the Western National Welsh Pony Show in Albany.  Congratulations, Morgan. We need more Morgan's and Sarah's.

BAR GR SECTION B OVERALL

Established in 1977, by the Verkuyl Family, this trophy is awarded to the high score of a Section B Pony.  Points are earned in the Registered Welsh Performance classes, judged on the pony.  (Classes which limit entry such as maiden or novice do not count.) Junior and adult exhibitors must be WPCAC members, (exception: Owners with Farm memberships), and the owner of the pony (Section B) must be a WPCAC member to qualify for this trophy.  Trophy to WPCAC owner.

1977-1981 - Napa Valley Sylvaner – Monique Nardone. We haven't seen or heard from the Nardone family for years, but during these years, they showed heavily. Monique's sister, Marisa, also showed, and between the two of them, they were always in the ribbons.
1982 - Whale Rock Sweet Briar – Maureen O'Brien – now Maureen Ferrell.
1983 - 1985 Rio Oso Gem – Teresa Diehl. Teresa is still in the area, and still working with ponies. We have run into her a couple of times in recent years.
1986 - Rio Oso Rocky Road – Garrett Radovich - Kiel’s big brother.
1987 -  Merched Cyfaill Tirion – Now is when I start to get a little fuzzy – but I believe Hope Hobday was riding “Daisy” at this time.
1988 - Talybont Tawmi – One of the Stanley kids – Derek or Jeralynn, and I think it was Jeralynn.
1989 - Merched Cyfaill Tirion – Hope Hobday
1990 -  Heather Hills Brass Tacks – Karen Young – Now we're getting into the group that has been riding “forever”.  Karen, Jackie and Maureen all were competing in the Sacramento County 4-H events, and all had Welsh Ponies, and all still have Welsh Ponies today.
1991 - Farmore Publicity – Tammy Burgin – Tammy started with Quarter Horses in her younger life, but got hooked with Welsh Ponies, and has been hooked for many years. “Merlyn” is the son of her very special Talybont Quick Silver, who gave her many babies, and really helped to launch Farmore Farms.
1992 - 1995 - Star Bright Sun Raider – Jackie Hubert. “Sunny” was one of Searle's Starbright's babies, and Jackie had many good rides with this fellow, as did Robert Creller, now also grown up.  Sunny was Robert's Lead Line Pony. Sunny went to college with Jackie and lived at Anne Westerman's place while she was at Cal Poly.
1996 -  KGF Girl Friday – Colleen Wing.  This pony has served many families very well, thanks to the wonderful work she got from Colleen.
& Alra Amber Sir Andrew – Lisa DeValle
1997 - 1999  KGF Girl Friday – Colleen Wing
2000 -  Windrose Coby – Rosie Lane
2001 - *Telynau Royal Charter – Tammy Burgin
2002 -  Windrose Coby – Megan Blythe. Megan purchased Coby from the Lane Family, and he continues his winning ways.

COSKREY'S SAPHIRE GEM MEMORIAL

The Hirons Family donated this Memorial, honoring one of their foundation mares, Coskey’s Saphire Gem.  This is awarded to the high score Registered Welsh Mare (A, B, C, D) in Produce of Dam classes.  Offspring must be registered, and may be A, B, C , D or Half-Welsh. Trophy is awarded to WPCAC owner of the dam.

1994 - Searle's Starbright – Jackie Hubert
1995 - Obispo Gizelle – Suzan Stevens
1996 - Charjo's Gypsy – R. Verkuyl
1997 - Obispo Gizelle – Suzan Stevens
1998 - Obispo Gizelle – Suzan Stevens
1999 - Charjo's Gypsy – R. Verkuyl
2000 - Mary's Melody – Jackie H. Verkuyl
2001 - *Kentchurch Marisa – Patricia Holmes
2002 - Mary's Melody – Jackie H. Verkuyl

Installment #3

As we begin a new year, I'm amazed to see that there are still 10 Perpetual Trophies that have not yet been mentioned in this series. Clearly, we have a lot of Perpetual Trophies, and a lot of history that goes into each one. We will continue with this series until each of the trophies has been mentioned, and list all of the recipients.

WPCAC Perpetual All Around High Point Section A Welsh Pony Trophy is awarded to the high score of a Section A pony. Points are earned in Registered Welsh performance classes judged on the pony. (Classes which limit entry such as maiden or novice do not count.). Junior and adult exhibitors must be WPCAC members, (exception: Owners with Farm memberships), and the owner of the pony (Section A) must be a WPCAC member to qualify for this trophy.  Trophy to the WPCAC owner.

This particular trophy dates back to 1977. It was also during this year that the Bar GR Section B Overall Perpetual Trophy was established – which shows that even back then, we had a significant number of both Section A and Section B ponies.

The WPCAC Perpetual trophy lived at the home of the Nardone Family from 1977-1981, as Listopada Owain was the recipient during these years.  Marisa Nardone and Owain were a team that was just hard to beat!  They entered everything, and they won everything.

In 1982 this award went to Searle's Starbright, owned and shown by Jackie Hubert. It was a new “team”, and from this point forward, this trophy has had many homes. Jackie and “Dingy” had many good years, and the pony was also shared with friend Kelly McParland – but 1982 was “their” year for this award.

In 1983, 1985 and 1986, Shiloh Top Brass won this award. “Topper” had several owners over the years, and my faded memory isn't helping me out here, but I believe he was owned and shown by Dawn Reath at this time. He was also shown by the Ruelas family, and was loved by many folks in the pony world.

1984, the award went to a little pony called Melody in G, also known as “Grief”. Over the years, she had been shown by Carrie McKay, owned by Marianne Elliston, and, I believe, the Stumbaugh Family. (One of these days, I'm going to have the information really wrong, and someone will come forward and straighten me out!)

1987 – Choice Snowflake – owned and ridden by Kristie Dudgeon from the Newcastle area. Christie and Snowy had many good rides together.

1988 the award went to British Nudgin, the cutest little pony! He had previously been owned by Nora Hirons, and had cared for her for many years. During this particular year, he belonged to the Koch family, where he lived for several years, providing a wonderful friendship with his rider.
1989 – Trywdd Terfyn Rhodonite – owned and ridden by Kerrie Hall. OK Kerrie – you're out there – drop us a note and give us some history on this guy.  He was beautiful, and you two had some wonderful times together, I know.

1990 – Chaparral's Crystal – owned and exhibited by the Maurer Family. I'm not sure who was showing Crystal at this time – I recall that David drove her, and believe Carrie McKay and Darci Maurer rode her.  How about the Maurers writing up some “history” for us with this beautiful little mare.

1991 – Obispo Sharpshooter, exhibited by David Valcheck. This was one heck of a driving pony, and David and Sharpie were a real tough team to beat.  David recently “surfaced” – I had a phone call from him. He and his family live in Davis, and he's completed Vet School, and is now a practicing Vet.  Congratulations, David. (David was our guest speaker at our annual meeting in January).

1992 – Poseidon's Protos, and 1993 – Llandefalle Silver Florin –  I can see the owner in my mind, I can hear her voice, I can even see her daughter – but I can't remember their names. These ponies were both great ponies! As I recall, they did a little bit of many things.

1994, 1995 – Keepsake's Dandy, owned and shown by Tina Berard. This was a team that was darned near impossible to beat – they drove everywhere, including the Rose Parade (more than once!).

1996, 1997, 1998 & 2002 – Coffing Oaks Charisma – owned and shown, over the years, by Justin, Brandon and Maureen Ferrell. This little pony has certainly been one of those “all around” ponies, who is willing to do anything and everything for her owners. She has, this past spring, just had her first foal, and he's already been at the shows “making points”.

1999 – Pinedale Vintage 93 – owned by the Hirons Family, and shown by Debbie Hirons. Debbie was able to take this pony and do it all with him – and jumping was his favorite sport! They were a wonderful team!

2000 – Coffing Oaks Brandy – During this particular year, Brandy was still owned by the Huberts, but was exhibited by Karen Young and Maureen Ferrell. They did such a great job with him that he eventually went to Washington to be with the Youell Family, where he continues to win, and win, and win!

2001 – Gaslight Chwyrlwyndt – Shown by Carrie McKay McWhorter. This was another case of a “team” that was just hard to beat!

2003 – Pinedale Captain Courageous – Owned by Don Hirons and Sarah Frushour. Sarah has had a wonderful year with “Bob”, her very special pony, who has taken care of her for many of her young years.

 STEPHAN WELSH

This award was established in 1989, being donated by the Harrington Family of Stephan Welsh. This Perpetual Trophy is awarded to the high score of a Section C or D Welsh Cob. Points are earned in Registered Welsh performance classes judged on the pony.  (Classes which limit entry such as maiden or novice do not count.).  Junior and adult exhibitors must be WPCAC members (exception: Owners with Farm Memberships), and the owner of the Cob (Section C or D) must be a WPCAC member to qualify for this trophy.  Trophy to WPCAC owner.

1989 – Leyeswick Brenin – owned and exhibited by the late Janina Owens.  Janina did a tremendous amount of work to promote the Welsh Cob, and she and Brenin were a wonderful team and great ambassadors for the Cob.
1990 – Leyeswick Brenin
1991 – Yonder Farms Bandwagon – owned and exhibited by the Stumbaugh Family
1992 – Yonder Farms Bandwagon
1993 – Leyeswick Brenin
1994 – *Okeden Taffy – Leased and exhibited by Gerald Verkuyl.  Gerald had his work cut out with this beautiful animal, as he hadn't been shown for quite some time when he came out west, but the two of them had a great time showing.  Taffy exhibited both English and Western, and did well in both disciplines.
1995 – Leyeswick Brenin
1996 – Leyeswick Brenin
1997 – Mary's Cadi – I believe, at this time, Cadi was exhibited by Janina Owens.
1998 – Jaycob’s Prince of Wales – Janina Owens
1998 – Jaycob’s Prince of Wales – Janina Owens
2000 – Wyvere Alexandra – Jessica San Diego. Jess and Lexi are still, today, cleaning up where ever they show. They have always been a great team, and continue as such.
2001 – Wyvere Alexandra – Jessica San Diego
2002 – Balsuma the Governess – Joan “Sam” Burnham. Sam and this mare are a driving team, and no matter where they go – it's a beautiful picture.  “Nessie” is a beautiful driving pony. Although Sam won this award this past year, she has yet to see it – it had moved to Mississippi, and has been returned, cleaned and engraved – and is currently decorating our living room!
2003 - *Sydenham Gardenia – owned by Gerald and Rhoda Verkuyl, shown by Gerald.  “Syd” has had a wonderful year, excelling in the Ridden Cob classes as well as driving classes.
